A talk-first practice for interior awareness
Find a feeling in your body. Say what it's like, out loud. Watch it take shape as light, and catch it in a jar you can come back to.
Why
When 700 people in Finland and Taiwan coloured in where they felt each emotion, the maps came out strikingly alike: anger hot in the chest and arms, sadness heavy and dim in the limbs, love warm through the chest and head.
Nummenmaa et al., PNAS 2014Interoception, the sense of what's happening inside you, can be measured and trained. People who notice their inner signals with curiosity, rather than worry, tend to regulate emotion better.
Mehling et al., PLOS ONE 2012 · Farb et al., Frontiers 2015Putting a feeling into words quiets the brain's alarm response. Describing a sensation, rather than fighting it, is where the shift starts.
Lieberman et al., Psychological Science 2007What
You speak; the guide listens, asks one gentle question at a time, and draws what you describe as it goes: where it is, how big, its edges, texture, temperature, weight, colour, how it moves. Sensations can sit inside the body or just outside it. When it's clear, you catch it in a jar. Your jars become a field guide to your own inner weather.
How
The belief practice draws on memory reconsolidation research: feel the old belief in the body, then hold it alongside a moment it wasn't true (Ecker 2018). It's a practice, not a treatment, and it isn't clinically tested in this form.
What next
A three-minute daily check-in builds the habit. Over weeks, your shelf shows patterns: where tension tends to live, what calm feels like for you, which old beliefs have loosened. Grounding counts as practice too.
